A Boo-tiful Halloween

I am a sucker for festivals. I love the colours of Holi, the dances of Navratri, the mid-night mass on Christmas, the lights in Diwali, the warmth of Lodhi or the Sevaiya on Eid. Having been in India all my life, we have learnt to love and celebrate all the festivals and these have become a part of our social calendar.  I’ve realized how we Indians don’t need a reason to celebrate, every few weeks there is a festival which gets us into merriment mode.

And now that the world has become smaller, we have even welcomed with open arms the celebration of the Halloween festival. What most of us know about Halloween is that it’s a “fancy dress party” but surely there’s more to it. We thought of looking a little deeper into it and this is what we found.

  • And that’s how it started – Believe it or not, the birthplace of Halloween is not a sugar factory. The holiday is believed to have originated around 2000 years ago in Ireland when it celebrated the end of harvest season. Back then it was believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead got a little blurry and the dead would come back to life and wreak havoc among the living. One way to scare the dead? Wear costumes and masks.
  • What’s not to love? To celebrate this festival kids dress up in different costumes and go Trick-or-treating that is asking the neighbours for candy. Some research says kids consume 7000 calories on that day (good luck getting them to sleep).
  • Pumpkins and Halloween go together like candy and Halloween: Carving pumpkins on Halloween is not only fun, it’s also believeto scare away evil spirits, so carve away!
  • Itsy bitsy spider: Don’t be scared if you see a spider on Halloween. This is believed to be the spirit of a deceased loved one who is watching over you.

Not surprisingly, Halloween is becoming a favourite with the kids… and why not! They get to dress up as their favourite characters, have loads of sweets and candies and trick people without having to apologise for it!
